SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT

We have some impressive news to share this afternoon as we recently had the privilege of hosting two international professors to visit Capps Middle School, Dr. Paula Maria Cardellino Alvarez, Researcher and Professor at the University ORT in Uruguay and Dr. Wesley Imms, an Associate Professor from the University of Melbourne Graduate School of Education in Australia. Joining the tour were guests from the architectural firm, DLR Group, Jim French and Dr. Marilyn Denison, our longtime partners from DLR that designed the award-winning Capps. After a tour of the Capps Campus, Professor Imms presented the results of his preliminary research, which he has conducted at Capps, as well as at schools in 9 additional countries. Dr. Imms is a global leader in research on learning environments, and his work explores how the design of school spaces can better support the skills our students need in today’s world, like collaboration, innovation, and creativity, by designing flexible spaces that embrace flexibility rather than uniformity.

Throughout the tour, our team had the opportunity to share how Capps reflects our District’s vision, and we spoke openly about what has worked, what we’ve learned, and how we continue to adapt to meet students’ needs through inspired staff innovation and enhanced educational experiences. We are proud to represent Putnam City on the global stage, and even more proud of the dedicated educators in our District who make this vision real.

And finally, when discussing dedicated educators, we acknowledge that even during summer break, many of our educators and administrators are spending their time to attend professional development sessions across the country. We want to take a moment to recognize this commitment to lifelong learning, as they continually add more tools to their already impressive professional toolboxes. While we hope our educators are also able to enjoy their break, rest, and rejuvenate, we must say thank you for their unparalleled dedication.

-Dr. Fred Rhodes

Putnam City Schools was honored to welcome Professor Wesley Imms from the University of Melbourne to Capps Middle School. His visit highlighted our role in a global study focused on how learning environments impact student success. The DLR Group, who designed Capps, joined him in exploring how thoughtful design can support teaching and learning. We’re proud to represent Putnam City in this international research effort and excited to share the insights ahead.

Congratulations to Eloise El Qacemi, 7th grade science teacher at Capps Middle School, who was named OSTA's Middle School Teacher of the Year at this year’s conference!

She was one of twelve Putnam City science educators who spent part of their summer at the Oklahoma Science Teaching Association Conference learning new strategies, trading ideas, and getting inspired for the year ahead. We’re so proud of Eloise and are grateful for the curiosity, energy, and passion our science team brings to their classrooms every single day!
